Carved oak longcase clock by William Nickals of Wells in Norfolk 

 

 

An attractively carved oak longcase clock by William Nickals of Wells in Norfolk. Probably a relation to Isaac Nickals, who was an excellent clockmaker and reportedly made clocks for King George III. The case itself has the date 1712 carved into it above the door, however this date can’t be validated, as no records can be found relating to William Nickals. 

 

Nevertheless the clock is a beautiful early example of a dark oak longcase clock. The hood is also of carved oak and has an arched pediment, with 3 turned finials. The dial is brass with brass spandrils surrounding a silvered chapter ring. The face has an inset silvered dial for the supplementary second hand. There is also a silvered day of month dial showing through a window to the lower part of the dial, unfortunately this part of the mechanism is not functioning. Above the face is a half moon area with brass spandrils and a silvered circular insert showing Wm Nickals Wells. 

 

The clock has an eight day movement and strikes the hour on a bell, the clock is in perfect working order and has recently been services, complete with 21 weights and a pendulum.
